Abstract

The exact etiology of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL) has not been fully elucidated despite its significant impact on the quality of life. Viral infection and vascular compromise are suggested as main etiologies. However, SSHL is known to occur very rarely with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. We present a case of 59 year old woman with newly diagnosed HIV infection complaining of both hearing impairment. Her hearing loss was recovered after five days of oral administration of high dose prednisolone. Since HIV infection can present SSHL as a presenting symptom like this case, we recommend HIV screening test for patients with SSHL.
